Completion Date: 2001
Commissioned by: Halton Borough Council
Budget: £12,000
Location: Runcorn

The Commission: To work closely with a local group of elders, some who had been resident in the area from childhood, to develop ideas for a permanent artwork relevant to the site.
From this and other research we developed a cast bronze capstan surrounded by a cast bronze and cobbled rope detail. The piece, in the form of a capstan used to moor boats, is reminiscent of Runcorn’s industrial past when the canal was carved into the landscape to distribute cargo around the country.

Special about this project: Several local groups contributed stories, poems and designs to give the piece a unique sense of time and place.
